Community Leveraged Learning is a non-profit whose mission is to provide project-based educational programs to struggling youth and adults, with a primary focus on language arts. Our professional team of writers, editors, and publishers deliver organic project driven workshops that fit the needs of our participants. These workshops can be thematically focused to meet specific areas of study for writing across curriculum while providing the essential basic skills of effective writing and critical thinking.
With an emphasis on application of skills, each participant turns in a finished work appropriate to the subject of study for a final publishable product: chapter books, novellas, anthologies of varying themes, plays, poetry collections, etc. This achievement builds the confidence and self-esteem of the participants, and the finished works are published and sold on the open market, thereby providing an equal share revenue stream for participants.
Our business philosophy is to turn every aspect of our program into teaching opportunities. After completing a program, participants become peer coaches and teach what they have learned at future workshops. Our internal publishing house serves as a training ground for youth and adult interns in graphic illustration, design and layout, eBook creation, general office administration, and publishing. We set a high standard of performance and commitment both for and from our participants and interns, not only in their artistic and business endeavors but also in their personal conduct. An important part of our mission is to instill in our participants a love of reading, writing, editing, learning, collaboration, inclusion and mutual respect.
Our current Board of Directors consists of the Staff Developer for Pinellas County Public Schools, an educational administrator and grant writer at St. Petersburg College, a technical writer and proofreader, an author of books for emergent readers and writers, and an accountant. Our core curriculum team consists of a wide range of professional authors, editors, proofreaders, graphic designers, and artists. As innovators, we are always bringing in new talent and professionals to broaden the perspective and experience of our workshop participants.
By tapping into the valuable talents and experiences of our community’s professionals, by encouraging community businesses to participate and contribute, and by working closely with parents and guardians, teachers and school administrators, and local governing bodies and businesses, we hope to create a network that invests in the success of workshop participants. Our organization’s positive impact on the lives of these participants can be profound.
With increased funding, Community Leveraged Learning has the potential to change the lives of thousands of at-risk youth and transitioning adults in powerful ways. Their success, in turn, strengthens and supports the communities in which they live.
